A tornado is a violently rotating column of air which is in contact with both a cumulonimbus (or, in rare cases, cumulus) cloud base and the surface of the earth. Tornadoes can come in many shapes, but are typically in the form of a visible condensation funnel, with the narrow end touching the earth. Often, a cloud of debris encircles the lower portion of the funnel.

The MetEd (Meteorology Education and Training) Website was established to provide education and training resources to benefit the operational forecaster community, university atmospheric scientists and students, and anyone interested in learning more about meteorology and weather forecasting topics. The site houses online learning materials, as well as information on other training and education activities, such as classroom courses and teletraining, and links to other related resources. MetEd is populated and maintained by the COMET Program, which is part of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research's (UCAR's) Office of Programs (UOP). The MetEd Website is made possible by the sponsors of the COMET Program.

The Global Forecast System (GFS) is global numerical weather prediction model run by NOAA. This model is run four times a day and produces forecasts up 16 days in advance, but with decreasing spatial and temporal resolution over time.<p>
The model is run in two parts: the first part has a higher resolution and goes out to 180 hours in the future, the second part runs from 180 to 384 hours. The resolution of the model varies in each part of the model: horizontally, it divides the surface of the earth into 35 or 70 kilometre grid squares; vertically, it divides the atmosphere into 64 layers and temporally, it produces a forecast for every 3rd hour for the first 180 hours, after that they are produced for every 12th hour.
