GEM - Global Environmental Multiscale
GEM is an acronym that stands for Global Environmental Multiscale. The Canadian Meteorological Centre’s GEM models use a horizontal variable resolution. The GEM model is global so that the long waves are handled properly for both data assimilation and, if necessary, extended-range forecasting. The model has a variable-resolution capability such that it is possible to use either a uniform-resolution latitude/longitude mesh, or a variable-resolution one that uses a rotated coordinate system with a high-resolution sub-domain that can be located over any portion of the globe. Outside this area, the grid spacing smoothly increases to reach its maximum value on the opposite side of the globe.
